On his Twitter profile, Biju Thomas describes himself as a chef, a cyclist, a writer and the “food guy” at mapmyfitness.com. We at Wearable Technologies had the pleasure of meeting this extraordinary man at the WTconference in February 2011, where he both delivered a captivating speech and won the Bluetooth Innovation World Cup 2010 in the category Sports and Fitness. Biju Thomas cooks for the biggest names in cycling and with the winner idea “SenseTech HALO” he and his partners are trying to make the world of cycling a little safer.
The SenseTech HALO is a personal impact sensor originally designed for cyclists. It is planned that the sensor can be attached unobtrusively to helmets and other headgear and therefore could also be used for other activities. The device will be able to communicate with the wearer’s smartphone using Bluetooth low energy technology. But there are plans to build a separate device as communication hub, a so-called “black box”, that could be attached to a bike because smartphones are, in most cases, neither splash nor dirt proof and often sensitive devices.
The sensor automatically calls for help in the event of an accident. This can be vital for cyclists who ride unaccompanied. The sensor device is in its final development stage and already works. It will cost sub $100 per unit, and will have multiple other measurements other than just impact. For more detailed information please contact info(at)sensetechus.com.
