Chinese tech company Huawei unveiled its new smartwatch Watch GT, and the company decided not to use the wearable-tech version of Android in its latest smartwatch, but instead opted for an in-house operating system.

The new Huawei Watch GT uses the open-source LiteOS with a tiny 10KB microkernel announced in May 2015. While Google’s Android-based WearOS runs apps written in Java, LiteOS runs JavaScript, and executes native code right off the metal.

“LiteOS can be simultaneously activated (across all devices) in about 700ms, it consumes little power and only needs micro amperage,” said George Zhou, president of Huawei’s Honor brand back in December of that year.

Huawei Watch GT comes with many interchangeable strap options, a round dial, a slim 10.6mm thickness, and a 1.39-inch OLED precise touch screen (454×454 pixels) display with 326ppi pixel density.

The most talked about feature is its two-week battery life with heart-rate monitoring and 90 minutes of exercise per week, due to a very low-power chip. Furthermore, the company claims that it lasts 30 days if you turn off the heart rate monitoring and the watch is used only for receiving messages and calls. However, if the high-energy applications such as GPS, heart-rate monitoring, and exercise monitoring are kept on continuously, the high-power chip kicks in and the battery life is shortened to 22 hours.

For heart rate monitoring, the Watch GT has integrated TruSeen 3.0 technology that is lauded to give you a more efficient and precise real-time heart-rate measurement.

The smartwatch is water-resistant up to 50 meters, it has a compass, barometer and altimeter. It’s integrated TruSleep 2.0 technology monitors your sleep, claiming to identify common sleep related issues and provides more than 200 potential suggestions for better sleep, reports Gadgets 360.

The Huawei Watch GT also shows notifications of any messages, calls, reminders, or alarms as well.

The watch case is made of metal, plastic, and ceramic materials, and comes in 2 color options: Black Stainless Steel and Stainless Steel. The options for the strap are: saddle brown leather silicone, graphite black silicone, fluorescent green silicone and glacier grey silicone.

The watch measures at 46.5×46.5×10.6 mm and it weighs 46 grams (without the strap).

Other specifications are: 16MB RAM and 128MB ROM, Bluetooth v4.2, and NFC. It does not support Wi-Fi, and it takes a little over 2 hours to get fully charged.

The Huawei Watch GT is priced at $230 and $287 for the Sport and Classic versions respectively.
