DFKI (Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz GmbH) announced today, the launch of SimpleSkin, its newest research project funded by the European Union. The main idea is to develop a sensor infrastructure for textiles. Just like smartphones with sensors are totally normal today, functional clothing could become mainstream, and, according to DFKI, create a plethora of new apps.
Prof. Paul Lokiwicz, Head of Department Augmented Reality at the DFKI and Lead Manager of Simple Skin says: “We want to produce generic, intelligent textiles, which can be used by a vast number of programs. An independent electronic control unit embedded into textile and garment ensures the sensor’ specific functionality with a smartphone app”.
SimpleSkin is one of eight projects chosen for funding by the European Union, out of 210 submissions, and started July 1st. For more information on this project, visit dfki.de.
