Samsung unveiled their first smartwatch that comes with a lot of cool features. The Galaxy Gear has a 1.63- inch AMOLED touchscreen with 320 x 320-pixel, and it‘s built in speaker and microphones enable calls directly from the watch. Another great feature is the built in camera. The wrist strap hosts a 1.9 megapixel BSI sensor and an autofocus lens that allows for low resolution pictures and videos at 720p with a maximum length of 10 seconds. That approach is very convenient for taking pictures on the go and with the integrated Bluetooth all pictures are wirelessly transmitted to your Samsung smartphone.
As a downside the Gear‘s AMOLED screen and the 800 MHz processor consume a lot of energy so it‘s non removable 315mAh cell lasts for only one day of normal use, according to Samsung. With the built in accelerometer the Gear can count steps and uploads them into the S Health application. RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal have also already developed health related apps for Samsung’s smartwatch.
The Gear only works with other Galaxy devices – for now the new Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1 (2014 edition), later, with a software update, it will also be compatible with the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S 3, and Galaxy Note 2.
At launch, there will be about 70 apps, including Evernote, Path and Ebay. The $299 Galaxy Gear will be available in different colors and comes with some of Samsung’s Touch-Wiz features like S-Voice and S-Translate. With this set of features, Samsung has come up with an impressive wearable technology concept and you can finally talk to your watch – just like Knight Rider.
