    Biography

    Babak Parviz is the creator of Google Glass, a pioneer of building contact lens microsystems, and a Director at Google X. He received his BA in Literature from University of Washington, BS in Electronics from Sharif University of Technology, MS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Physics from University of Michigan, PhD in Electrical Engineering from Univ. of Michigan; and completed his postdoctoral fellowship in Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard. His research and engineering interests span novel computing and communication paradigms, bionanotechnology, bioengineering, MEMS, and photonics. His work has been put on display at the London Museum of Science and has received numerous recognitions and awards including NSF Career Award, MIT TR35, Time magazine’s best invention of the year (2008 and 2012), Your Health Top 10 Medical advance of the year, and About.com top invention and has been reported on in thousands of articles worldwide. In 2012 he was selected by Ad Age as one of the 50 most creative people in the United States.

    Biography

    Deepa is the CEO and Founder of Cuff -- smart jewelry that bridges the fashion/function divide. In its short tenure, Cuff has been profiled everywhere from E! News to Good Morning America, and Deepa has become a spokesperson of sorts for wearables that women might actually want to wear. Deepa received her B.A. from Columbia University in psychology and creative writing (which her father jokes are the same thing), and went onto receive her J.D. at Northwestern University, in a joint law and journalism program. She practiced law at Latham & Watkins for 8 years before making a most unusual lateral leap to become the VP of Product at luxury retailer, Restoration Hardware. She's always loved making things and treasure-hunting, and lives in Berkeley with her equally-fond-of-treasure-hunting gaggle of children.

    Biography

    Since co-founding Synopsys in 1986, Dr. Aart de Geus has expanded Synopsys from a start-up synthesis enterprise to the world leader in electronic design automation. Dr. de Geus has long been considered one of the world’s leading experts on logic synthesis and simulation, and frequently keynotes major conferences in Electronics and Design Automation. He is the recipient of numerous industry and community honors, including Electronic Business Magazine’s “CEO of the Year” (2002) and “Top 10 Most Influential Executives” (2005), the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal (2007), the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG) “Spirit of the Valley” Lifetime Achievement Award” (2007), the GSA “Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award” (2009), and most recently, the 2013 Silicon Valley Engineering Council Hall of Fame Award. Dr. de Geus is active in the business community, serving on the Boards of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group (SVLG), Applied Materials, the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA), and the Electronic Design Automation Consortium (EDAC). He is also heavily involved in education for the next generation, having created the Synopsys Outreach Foundation in 1999, which promotes project-based science and math learning throughout Silicon Valley.

    Biography

    Dave Lamb is a Senior Physics Research Specialist working in the 3M Display Materials and Systems Division Laboratory at 3M Company since 2000. Dave joined 3M upon completion of his doctorate in physics and post-doctoral research The University of Alabama in Huntsville and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. Dave's current research focuses on display efficiency and the development of meaningful metrics for display visual quality.

  • Joshua Windmiller, Electrozyme

    Joshua Windmiller, Electrozyme

    Biography

    Dr. Windmiller is an internationally-recognized expert in printed biosensor technology. His Ph.D. research focused on the development of printed biosensors, bioelectronics, and biofuel cells. He has published over 50 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings and has eleven US patents issued or pending. Dr. Windmiller, a Gordon Fellow and SHIFT Award recipient, is the recipient of Printed Electronics USA 2010 Academic R&D award for his developments in textile-based printed bioelectronics. He completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Laboratory for NanoBioElectronics at UCSD in 2013, where he was supported by the von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and led a commercialization grant sponsored by the DOE. He currently serves as the CEO of Electrozyme, a startup that he co-founded devoted to the development of novel printed biosensors and biofuel cells for application in the personal wellness and healthcare domains.

    Biography

    Liz is a visionary leader who knows how to get new technology to the market. She started MIO in 1999 to address a gap she identified in the market for heart rate monitors for physical training. She is now one of the world’s most experienced leaders in the field of heart rate monitors and holds 5 patents and 2 patent pending in the area of fitness and sport performance.
    Under her direction, MIO has continued to grow and launch new innovative products for heart rate monitoring training including the award-winning Mio ALPHA, the world's first performance level heart rate sport watch without a chest strap.
    Liz’s background includes positions with leading high tech companies including Oracle, AT&T, IBM and TELUS. She has a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

    Aaron Salow, XOEye Technologies

    Biography

    Aaron Salow is the CEO and Co-Founder of XOEye Technologies, a
    Nashville, Tenn. based company that produces end-to-end wearable
    tech solutions for industrial markets. Aaron oversees product development,
    long-term marketing strategies and investor relations. Aaron’s working experience in industrial-collar and manufacturing
    companies allowed him to develop his vision early-on for how wearable
    technology can solve a number of the inefficiencies and safety
    issues in blue-collar environments. After nearly four years of research
    and development, Aaron, alongside a team of handpicked enterprise
    tech experts, launched an industrial-grade eyewear device
    that captures and streams high fidelity audio and visual content,
    enabling first-person point-of-view (POV) workplace collaboration.
    To complement the device Aaron also drove the development of the company’s
    proprietary development platform (XOLinux) and cloud-hosted
    content management suite (Vision). Aaron holds an MBA in Management from Belmont University in
    Nashville, TN.

    Biography

    Kip Fyfe is a Wearable Technology innovator and visionary. In 1999, as co-founder and CEO of Dynastream, he introduced a patented running footpod sold through Nike and other high-profile companies. He then developed ANT+ as the ultra-low power wireless protocol, soon becoming an industry standard. Dynastream was successfully sold to Garmin in 2006. Kip took a few years off, but his imagination led him to start 4iiii Innovations, providing an ecosystem of interoperable wearables for both sport and general self-quantification all with the goal to provide relevant information ‘when you need it’.

    As Vice President of adidas Digital Sports, Paul Gaudio leads the creation, development and operations of new end-to-end interactive businesses. With the aim of building a deeper connection to consumers through interactive services, Paul has led key initiatives in the areas of CRM/Consumer Marketing, miadidas Mass Customization, miCoach Wearable Technologies and Connected Experiences. Paul earned a degree in Industrial Design from Carnegie-Mellon and over the last 25 years has held a variety of key roles including: Director of Design at adidas America, Co-Founder, I-Generator, a boutique innovation consulting firm in Portland OR, Director of Design and Development, Norton Motorcycles, and most recently Head of Strategy, adidas Sport Performance, where he championed the idea of extending the adidas brand into the interactive space.

    Biography

    Silona Bonewald is the director of product development and community at Emotiv Inc – a bioinformatics company offering a unique platform for crowd-sourced brain research. Emotiv is the leading company in the field of Brainwear technology. Bonewald has been involved in developer community engagement for over 10 years and was trained as a large scale systems architect. She designed and implemented one of the first large scale multinational CMS systems on the internet. Bonewald coined the terms codeathon and citability, and produced a top iPhone app for teaching children music theory. Her goal is to create products that people want and need by making them part of the development process. She is co-writing a book to codify these processes. Bonewald has curated think tanks that people talk about a decade later in regards to identity management, open data, and APIs.

    Biography

    Dr. Kal Mos is the Sr. Engineering Director of Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America, Inc. He joined Mercedes-Benz in 2002, to create and lead Connected Infotainment and Consumer Electronics Integration group.
    Kal brings extensive development and management experience for context-aware connected features, and a proven ability to turn visionary ideas into exceptional products. Prior to Mercedes-Benz, Kal worked as a Chief Technologist at OnStar where he managed a team of General Motors’ Telematics experts and engineers to define, develop and prototype the next generation of OnStar in-vehicle hardware and software platform. Earlier in his career, Kal held several positions building and leading high-performance engineering teams that developed software applications for CE Devices and Cloud platforms in Switzerland, Japan, India and US. Kal is an author of several publications and holds three patents. He has a Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Tokyo in Japan.

    Jean-Francois Rubon is SVP of Innovation & Strategy within Gemalto. He is based in the Bay Area and is responsible for establishing technology partnerships between Gemalto and innovation players from start-ups to big brands in the mobile communication ecosystem. In his 10+ year career at Gemalto, Jean-Francois has held various positions in product management, innovation, R&D, machine-to-machine communication and standardization within the Telecommunications team. Prior to Gemalto, Jean-Francois worked with several French telecommunication companies, and lead the development and creation of several mobile products. Jean-Francois holds an MSc in Computer Science from the National Institute for Applied Sciences (INSA) in Rennes, France.

    Akinori Takahagi is co-founder and CEO of Moff Inc., a wearable device and new user interface product/service startup, based in Tokyo, Japan. Moff creates new active play experiences for kids based on low-cost wearable devices and high-level sensing analysis platform. This platform can be used easily by 3rd-party. Akinori is an expert in product planning, marketing, and business strategy. Akinori worked at A. T. Kearney as an management consultant and worked at "Mercedes-Benz" as a product manager of AMG models and achieved the highest sales volume in Japan market. He was responsible for new product planning, launch management and marketing for new models. After that, he co-founded the consulting company and social digital book service startup. He has enough experiences of B to C business in the field of both hardware and software. Akinori lives with his wife and one child.

    Chris Bryant is Vice President and Business Unit Manager of consumer electronics at HZO, where he utilizes his experience in technology commercialization and venture capital for early stage, high tech companies to help HZO identify, build and sustain a dynamic range of business growth opportunity. For 12 years Chris has been successful commercializing technology in a variety of roles, from product developer to chief executive. He has vast knowledge of nano technology and thin film material coatings with a strong focus on applications used to protect electronic devices. Chris also founded and acted as CEO of a venture backed nano coatings company called Xeromax Sciences, which later joined P2i. At P2i, he served as VP of Business Development, and provided oversight and direction for the licensing of new technologies.

    Carine Collé, Florian Puech and Sanya Rai are all completing their M.A./ M.Sc. in Innovation Design Engineering from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College, London. Together, they have developed Amoeba - a wearable monocle that uses bio-parameters to help users intuitively organise web content. Amoeba has been featured in many design and technology blogs and new channels - including CNET, Dezeen, Gizmodo, SkyNews, PSFK and many others.

    Karl Martin is the co-founder and CEO of Bionym. He is an innovator and entrepreneur, one that is constantly driven to create new things that capture the imagination. He is a recognized expert in biometrics, security, and privacy, having served as an expert witness, and an international speaker on these subjects. Karl also has unique insights into the startup world, and the future of wearable technology. He holds a Ph.D in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Toronto, where he was formerly an instructor. Karl has invented multiple security and biometric technologies still in current use today.     David Holz is CTO and Co-founder of Leap Motion, a company breaking down the barriers between people and technology to realize the full potential of both. Prior to co-founding Leap Motion, David contracted for NASA’s Langley Research Center and conducted neuroscience research while at The Max Planck Institute.     Anush Elangovan is Founder and CEO of Nod Labs whose mission is to create a beautiful way for people to touchlessly and gesturally communicate with the world around them. He worked at Google building Chromebooks before founding Nod Labs. Prior to Google he had worked at Agnilux, FireEye and Cisco. Anush has more than 20 patents pending or issued.     Biography

    Adam Adelman – Mr. Adelman’s career path has not been a straight one. He is the Co-Founder and CEO of Mighty Cast, the company behind The NEX Band and its patent-pending base and token technology. The goal of The NEX Band is to disrupt the wearable space and give power to the consumer to customize their smart band both on the inside and out through the company's NEX collectible "Mods". Founded in 2012, the company was recently awarded CMF’s highest monetary award, Engadget’s 2013 Reader’s Choice Award, and was a 2014 SXSW Finalist in the Accelerator Wearable Technology Competition. The company has appeared in CNET, CBS, Mobile Syrup, Gamasutra, The Verge, among others. Prior to starting Mighty Cast, Adelman Co-founded and was CEO of Juno Baby, a multiple Emmy Award winning line of children’s educational products which ranged from televised content, toys, publishing, apparel, and mobile applications - 3 of which appeared in Apple’s Top 10 List and Time Magazine’s Top 25 iPad App List.

    Biography

    Sean Hodgins is an independent inventor who has recently been making waves in the electronics and robotics community with his original concepts, and inspired inventions. Sean earned his Bachelor’s degree from McMaster University’s, Bachelor of Technology Program, with a focus in automotive and vehicle technology. Come September he is set to begin work on his Master’s degree at McMaster, in which he will be developing a proprietary automotive sensor. Sean has a deep passion for finding applications of energy harvesting in wearable technologies. His “Peltier Ring”, which served as a proof-of-concept for heat based energy extraction from wearable technologies, has been featured in Popular Science Magazine, Hackaday, and Gizmodo. His start-up company, Idle Hands Development, is currently being contracted by McMaster University to develop a series of proprietary robots that will be used as learning tools in labs and classrooms. We expect to see great things from this young and motivated entrepreneur.

    Greta Kreuzer is Co-Founder and CFO at cosinuss°, a start-up specialized on the development of wearable technologies in the ear and based in Munich, Germany. cosinuss° developed a technology, called earconnectTM, that enables the monitoring of heart rate, core body temperature and arterial oxygen saturation of the blood in the ear. Based on this technology, cosinuss° provides market specific wearables for sports, for health care and for worker´s safety.
    Greta´s background includes positions at Bosch, Yahoo! and Schreiner Group and was responsible for business development at a startup in the field of robotics. Now at cosinuss°, she is responsible for financing, innovation management and business creation. Greta holds a diploma degree in economics from the Technical University of Munich.

    Biography

    Research Focus: Jeff Orr co-manages the analyst resources and research agenda for the mobile devices research at ABI Research. As an individual contributor, he focuses on mobile computing including tablets, ultraportables and future immersive computing technologies. He also leads research into markets for mobile broadband modems and hotspot routers. Past Experience, Memberships, Accolades and Media:
    Jeff has more than 23 years of industry, technology, and analyst experience, including product management and marketing at companies such as Proxim and Diamond Multimedia.     Marco Peluso founded Qardio in early 2012 with the determination to improve heart-centered healthcare by developing a line of revolutionary, personal monitoring devices. Prior to founding Qardio, Marco’s career spanned fourteen years in London’s financial industry. After graduating summa cum laude from Bocconi University with a degree in Business Administration, he initially took a position with JPMorgan. As a technology, media and telecom investment banker for JPMorgan, he advised some of the bank’s largest clients. By age 28, Marco became partner at one of Europe’s best-established hedge funds, where he shared management responsibility for a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio.Friends since childhood, Marco and co-founder, Rosario Iannella, have spent a virtual lifetime collaborating together with a shared interest in the practical uses of digital technology.
    Marco left the finance industry to start Qardio after his father suffered a stroke that’s origin was difficult to determine due to a lack of the very type of routine monitoring devices Qardio now produces.

    Biography

    Stéphane is co-founder and CEO of OMsignal, a VC backed, bio-sensing apparel company. He has been building technology and communication businesses for more than 15 years. He was co-founder andCEO of Theralive, a small firm specialized in mobile health applications and services, and was co-founder and CEOof Mobivox, a global mobile VoIP platform. In addition to being a repeat entrepreneur, he served as Bell Canada’s Vice President where he built and grew new lines of business including the company’s e-commerce group. He was also Chief Marketing Officer of Yellow Media, where he led the development and marketing of digital and mobile products for platforms such as RedFlagDeals.com, LesPAC, YellowAPI, AutoTRADER and Mediative. Stéphane holds a master’s degree in Management of Technology from the University of Waterloo and a bachelor’s degree in Finance from the Université du Québec à Montréal.

    Biography

    David Birnbaum, Senior UX Design Manager at Immersion Corporation, has been creating haptic experiences for over 10 years, in which time he has collected 20 patents in the fields of user experience, wearables, gaming, medical devices, mobile communication, and rich interactive media. A world expert in haptic design, he is responsible for the creative decisions that lead to the tactile feel of Immersion’s implementations. He also oversees design for the company’s growing rich media business. He's driven by a desire to tell stories with the sense of touch and to bring emotion and realism to digital experiences. David holds a B.S. in Music Industry from USC and a M.A. in Music Technology from McGill University.

    Biography

    Professor Byung Jin Cho received Ph. D degrees in electrical engineering from KAIST, Korea, in 1991. From 1991 to 1993, he was with IMEC, Leuven, Belgium, as a Research Fellow. From 1993 to 1997, he joined the Memory R&D division of Hyundai Electronics (now SK Hynix Semiconductor), Korea, as a Section Manager, where he led a research team for the process development for 256M and 1G DRAM and Flash EEPROM. In 1997, he joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the National University of Singapore (NUS), as a faculty member. Since 2007, he is with Department of Electrical Engineering in KAIST, Korea, as a faculty member. His main research interests are nano-scale CMOS device technology, graphene-based electronics, energy harvesting devices, and wearable electronics. He has published over 350 technical papers and holds over 50 patents. He is an IEEE Senior Member since 2001, and currently the president of Korean Graphene Research Society.

    Dr. Ernesto Martinez is the special assistant to Kopin CEO Dr. John C.C. Fan as well as a technologist and wearable systems expert. At Kopin, Dr. Martinez works closely with Dr. Fan to direct investments in key research and development areas for the company’s wearable technologies. Before joining Kopin, he was a post doctorate at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University, where he worked to develop soft exoskeletons to aid children with neuromuscular gait disabilities. His expertise in the field of biomechatronics and extreme human-machine interfaces aim to advance and push the boundaries of user-experiences with wearable technology. Dr. Martinez holds a Ph.D. from the MIT Media Lab where he developed state-of-the-art bionic limbs and interfaces as a member of the Biomechatronics Research Group.
