Gerber Tech Explores Novel Ways to Create Garments Using Next Generation Technology

Fashion design is becoming tech savvy as more and more designers are moving away from the drawing board and using technology to bring novel products to the market. The notion of smart clothes has been around for a while. Designers, including big names in fashion and technology are trying to make the clothes you wear as smart as the phone you use. Same thing goes for the competitors at the ideation 2018. Gerber has just announced the names of the students who will be featured during the October event. The 5 finalists were picked from more than 90 entries by a global panel of industry professionals.

Submitted applications came from 17 schools across the nation. The 5 finalists are:

Angelica Alarcon from the University of the Incarnate Word submitted a jacket with solar panels installed on the sleeves, which is connected to a phone charger in the jacket pocket.

Loren Franco from El Centro College submitted a dress that utilizes an electronic cutting machine to cut out floral designs and a textile that is digitally printed.

Adrian Guevara from Jannette Klien University submitted a garment utilizing organic fabrics and dyes with unconventional materials, wearable tech and laser cut motif inspired by the Aztec culture.

Sigele Nickerson-Adams from El Centro College and submitted a top and trouser outfit that has zero waste from the materials it utilized.

Tyesha Wilson from Fanshawe College submitted a ball gown that was digitally and 3D printed.

The designers and their garments will be showcased at the ideation 2018 fashion show set to be held on October 5th. The student designers were tasked with incorporating technology using the Pantone® Color of the Year, Ultra Violet, along with any combination of colors from the associated color palettes provided by Pantone.
