Qualcomm has finally launched its next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 Platform – a made-for-wearables processor designed especially for smartwatches. The Snapdragon Wear 3100 succeeds the existing 2100 model found in many smartwatches currently on the market.

The platform is based on a new ultra-low power system architecture designed to deliver a rich interactive mode, new personalized experiences, and extended battery life, according to the company.
Qualcomm has spent the past two years working on the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform, which is not a single processor or chip, but the combination of a processor, co-processor, modem, and various other components.
“Qualcomm Technologies has played a critical role in the evolution of the smartwatch segment and our customers are currently shipping more than 100 Wear OS by Google smartwatches with 25 brands globally based on our existing platforms,” said Anthony Murray, senior vice president and general manager, voice, music and wearables, Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd. “With the Snapdragon Wear 3100 Platform, we envisioned a new ultra-low power system architecture and in collaboration with the latest from the Wear OS by Google team, to help deliver a rich interactive mode, bring in new personalized experiences and support extended battery life for tomorrow’s smartwatches. We are delighted to announce Fossil Group, Louis Vuitton, and Montblanc as our first Snapdragon Wear 3100 customers.”

Qualcomm claims that in the lowest power mode, the battery will deliver 67% lower power than the 2100. As far as other forms of power consumptions, the company claims, 49% lower GPS power, 43% lower keyword detection power, 34% lower MP3 playback power, and 13% lower voice query power over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, reports Forbes.
Qualcomm announced that an update will be available shortly after the launch to make the new chip even more power efficient.
The Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform will come in three impressions to satisfy different types of smartwatches. One will target tethered Bluetooth and Wi-Fi smartwatches, another will target GPS-based tethered smartwatches, and the last will have LTE connectivity, according to the Forbes report.
