When someone mentions planar magnetic headphones, we picture headphones that are large over-ear models such as the Blue Ella or Audeze Sine. But now, RHA, a Scottish headphone company, has introduced its new headphones CL2 Planar, which it dubbed “the first planar magnetic Bluetooth headphone.” It’s built around what RHA says is “the most compact planar magnetic driver ever released.”

The company has brought the tech down to a tiny new size with the new earphones. Not only are the buds very compact, but they’re the first ever planar magnetic wireless headphones, says RHA.
From outside, the CL2s have RHA’s familiar look, showing no outward signs of the new technology inside. The wireless option uses a Bluetooth neckband with a 12-hour battery life, but the buds can also be connected directly with 2.5mm balanced or 3.5mm cables. Just like the company’s CL1 Ceramic buds, the housings for the CL2s are made from scratch-resistant zirconium dioxide. Included with the buds, band and wires are a storage case, flight adapter and various silicone and Comply foam tips, reports EndGadget.
The interior, however, is where these earbuds differentiate themselves. The ultra-thin 16-micrometer diaphragm inside the CL2s is part of the most compact planar magnetic driver that’s ever been released. According to RHA, it took the company four years to develop them. The casing of each earbud is made out of scratch-proof zirconium dioxide.
Planar magnetic headphones create a perfect magnetic balance using opposing fields. A helix-shaped copper coil in the middle of that oscillates in reaction to the audio signal. The oscillations are captured by a diaphragm, which transmits the sounds to your ears.

The headphones certainly don’t come cheap; RHA is asking for $899.95 for the CL2 Planar. They’re now available to pre-order on RHA’s site, and deliveries and retail availability begin on September 12th.
